From 9.2 million visits in September of 2011 to 139 million in the same month in 2012, Pinterest took a 1400% leap!

You are probably seeing Pinterest more and more around the Internet.  But what is it?
Pinterest is a bookmarking website that lets you “pin” images and videos that you want to save or share with others on virtual pin boards.  Think about using a pushpin to attach a photo to a corkboard or bulletin board and that is pretty much what Pinterest is.  You could compare it to Digg or StumbleUpon, but Pinterest is only for images and videos.

Like Facebook and Twitter, Pinterest lets people follow you and they can “re-pin” and “like” the content that you have that they like and add it to their own Pinterest.

You can also do the same with things others have pinned on their site.  There is also aPinterest button that you can put on your website or blog and people can follow you onPinterest.
When you are looking at another person’s pin board and see an image you like, there are 5 things you can do:
  • follow that pin board
  • like the pin
  • comment on the pin
  • re-pin the pin onto one of your pin boards
  • follow the person
When others do any of these actions on your pins, you will grow your audience and your exposure with Pinterest will grow.  (Much like Facebook and Twitter, the more followers you have, the more people want to follow you, so your audience can grow exponentially).

That also means if you are using the Pinterest button on your blog or website, you can potentially get more traffic.

There is also a Pinterest book-marklet (half bookmarker, half applet) that you can add to your web toolbar, so you can quickly and easily add an image or video that catches your attention when you are browsing.
You can create as many pin boards on Pinterest as you like.  For instance, if you had a number of hobbies or interests, you could create a pin board for each one.
Pinterest does not allow direct promotion on its site, but clever business people find some very creative ways to get around that without obviously promoting their services and products, such as showing off a product collection picture or video.
Enjoy this great and thorough YouTube video about how to use Pinterest for business:
Pinterest works for people who don’t need to write blogs and if you only want to share images with short comments, it is better than Twitter and if you want 2-way conversations it works better than Tumblr that has limited commenting.

God bless you!
