Is it true that an Asteroid in 2040 is supposed to hit earth?

Early in 2012, astronomers who had been tracking an asteroid called 2011 AG5, were predicting a chance that Earth would be hit by this Asteroid in 2040.  They had observed its orbit since January 2011.  Because of the asteroid’s placement, it has only been observed for about half an orbit around the sun, but will be more visible in 2013 and 2015.
Isn’t it coincidental that Dec 21, 2012 was supposed to be the end of the world on the Mayan Calendar?
NASA’s Near Earth Object (NEO) Program felt the odds were 1 in 625 that the asteroid would get close enough to Earth to cause a collision, but would need more time to observe it.  The earth’s circumference is 8,000 miles and the size of the asteroid was estimated at approximately 450 feet wide.  Even with the relatively small size, an impact with the earth would have the same result as 100 megatons of dynamite (roughly two times the power of the strongest nuclear weapon used to date) and would destroy an area in a diameter of a hundred miles.

The Asteroid in 2040 was listed on the Sentry Risk Table as a level one on Torino Scale.

The Torino Scale is like the earthquake Richter scale, but for classifying a hazard associated Earth impact for newly found asteroids and comets. A Torino rating of one is a routine discovery in which a pass near the Earth is predicted that poses no unusual level of danger.  It was removed from the Sentry Risk Table on Dec 21, 2012 and it is currently rated at 0 on the Torino Scale.

In October 2012, researchers from the University of Hawaii were able to observe a very faint outline of the asteroid.  Their findings have concluded definitively that there will not be a collision of earth and this Asteroid in 2040.
Despite the fact that it is now unlikely there will be collision, researchers at NASA’s NEO Program are pleased that they had the opportunity to experience the planning and studying for a real life deflection problem.   They feel that they have gained some very valuable knowledge in how handle an object such as the Asteroid in 2040 that may threaten to collide with earth in the future.  This isn’t the only time we’ve had a close call. In December, two asteroids – 2012 XE54 and 4179 Toutatis both came close to Earth.
Enjoy this YouTube video that talks about how the asteroid is more likely to miss Earth now:
God bless you!
