Black icebergs can be quite an amazing thing to see;  which is likely why this black iceberg photo went viral so easily on the Internet recently.

Icebergs are a large piece of ice that detach from a glacier.  It is called calving and usually happens as a result of tides, waves or possibly earthquakes.  Most icebergs are white, except when they first calve (break off) and at that time appear blue.  But they can also be green, brown or black.
Recently a black iceberg photo went viral on the internet after being posted on Reddit.  The various colors of ice are caused by density, impurities and air bubbles.  Black ice is very dense and bubble free, the dark layers usually mean there is a great deal of rock material probably from the base of the parent glacier.

It is not known where the black iceberg photo was taken, but irregularly shaped icebergs are typical off the coast of Greenland, northern Canada and Alaska.

The above-water shape of an irregular iceberg does not necessarily provide information about its underwater size.  But aircraft radar and sonar from ships are able to determine the size of icebergs.
In the Northern Hemisphere icebergs can be a threat to commercial and human activities. There are currently petroleum explorations off the coast of Canada with drill platforms that could be endangered by icebergs such as the one seen in the black iceberg photo. Near Valdez, Alaska, the Columbia Glacier is showing signs of disintegrating and it is feared that icebergs could drift into Prince William Sound and create a danger to oil tankers operating from the port of Valdez.
US Geological Survey glaciologists post iceberg forecasts. Oil and gas explorations in the Beaufort Sea and between the Queen Elizabeth Islands are threatened by collisions with even small ice islands and platforms and their pipelines. The threat to shipping in the North Atlantic is now minimal, as a result of the establishment of the International Ice Patrol after the sinking of the Titanic in 1912.
God bless you!
