Maria Sharapova aimed to return to the No. 1 spot in the tennis rankings after a spectacular 2012 season.

She became the World No. 1 for the first time on August 22, 2005, and again achieved the ranking from The Women’s Tennis Association for the fifth time on June 11, 2012.  Maria Sharapova is definitely at the top of her game.
This beautiful tennis star is featured in many ads for major sponsors and was featured in the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue.  She is less known for her work with the United Nations Development Program Goodwill Ambassador.  She is concerned with the Chernobyl Recovery and Development Program.

Maria Sharapova won her first Grand Slam title was big news as it was her break to the big leagues came when at 17, she beat top seed Serena Williams the two-time defending champion at Wimbledon in 2004.

She was born in Russia, but now lives in Florida.  She briefly left tennis in 2008 when she was troubled by a chronic shoulder injury.  This finally resulted in surgery in October 2008. Anyone who thought Maria’s career was over was sadly mistaken.  Her best tennis playing was still to come at this point.  Maria Sharapova recovered and returned to the game in May 2009 and made it back to the women’s top 10 in March 2011.
This year she won her fourth Grand Slam at the French Open. She is a three-time Grand Slam singles champion. This makes her the 6th woman in to complete the career Grand Slam.
The Grand Slam is when a player wins all of the following tennis tournaments in a year:
The Australian Open in January
The French Open in May/June
Wimbledon in June/July
The US Open in August/September
A “Golden Grand Slam”, also known as the “Golden Slam” is when a tennis player wins the Olympic gold medal along with the four major tournaments in a single calendar year.   Maria Sharapova was SO CLOSE to capturing this title in 2012 as she won a silver medal at the 2012 London Olympics.
It is certain that there is more tennis news to come from Maria Sharapova.  She is a real contender in women’s tennis and she will certainly continue to break old records and set new ones.  Maria’s earnings in 2012 are reported at $26 million and her net worth is reported at over $90 million and growing.
She is currently engaged to European basketball player, Sasha Vujacic.
God bless you!
