Gangnam Style Death

Gangnam Style Death

by  | on December 16, 2012

Almost everyone with an internet connection knows what Gangnam Style is.

It is a dance made famous by South Korean performer, Psy, and the views on YouTube have just made it the most watched video ever.
The dance itself is very energetic and mimics a horse trotting with accompanying hand and arm gestures.  Needless to say, it requires a certain level of fitness to complete the dance.
Recently at an office party in England, there was a Gangnam Style death as a 46 year old father of three suffered chest pains and ultimately a heart attack and died after performing the dance for his co-workers.  Eamonn Kilbride was always known as the life and the party and loved dancing according to his wife Julie, who was at the party and attempted to resuscitate him when he collapsed.
This has led cardiologists to remind everyone that any form of exercise that is outside of someone’s normal rituals, particularly when mixed with a party atmosphere, should be done with extreme caution.  In other words, know your limits and stick to them.

Gangnam Style has been nominated as one of the top ten songs of the year, but very recently some controversial videos from earlier in PSY’s rap career have surfaced causing many to wonder if they will affect his popularity in the US.

In 2004, Psy performed a song that was his response to an accident involving the US military in which 2 South Korean girls were accidently killed.  In the video, PSY lifts a model of a U.S. tank above his head and smashes it onstage, repeatedly hitting it while an audience gives their encouragement.
This week, Psy, a 34 year old who was born Park Jae-sang in South Korea but educated in the US, issued an apology for his “inflammatory and inappropriate language” toward the US that called for the murder of American soldiers and their families.
Part of his apology included the following statement: “While I’m grateful for the freedom to express one’s self I’ve learned there are limits to what language is appropriate and I’m deeply sorry for how these lyrics could be interpreted. I will forever be sorry for any pain I have caused anyone by those words.”
Many Americans are questioning if they should accept Psy’s apology or if they should stop downloading his video, boycott his music and ask radio stations to stop playing any of Psy’s performances which will cause a Gangnam Style death.  Only time will tell, but regardless of what happens, a little of PSY’s popularity is sure to suffer.

God bless you!
