Irish Rumors about Bill Clinton

Irish Rumors about Bill Clinton

by  | on December 12, 2012

Rumors are rampant in Washington about Bill Clinton and the US Ambassadorship to Ireland.

about Bill Clinton
Some of the fuel for the rumor may come from a comment Clinton made when he was in Ireland in November.  The former president is very popular in Ireland, when he was US president he helped to broker the Northern Ireland peace agreement.
There was a statue of Clinton recently erected at a golf course in Limerick, as an expression of Ireland’s appreciation for his part in the 1998 peace process and Bill Clinton was recently named a “Freeman of Limerick”.
Bill Clinton is quoted as saying, “Because of my Irish heritage, if I bought a house here I could run for president of Ireland,” according to the New York Post.

Actually, Clinton does have a slight Irish heritage, but not enough direct ancestors to qualify to run for president under Irish law. Hilary Clinton was in Ireland recently and was asked about Bill Clinton and the possibility and ambassadorship and she replied, “I cannot comment on what President Obama might do in the second term, it’s his decision”.

It is well known that President Obama is all about Bill Clinton because of his help in the recent Presidential election. Many have wondered how Clinton would be repaid for his support of Barack Obama during the last election. It is felt that Clinton can probably get just about anything he wants from a grateful Mr. Obama.
After his last term as US President, Clinton started the leading nonprofit Clinton Global Initiative which focuses on many world issues, such as climate change, poverty in Africa, childhood obesity and economic opportunities. But as the latest rumors fly, it is not evident whether Bill Clinton would take time off from CGI to be the ambassador to Ireland, not to mention the annual summit of his Clinton Global Initiative with world leaders in New York.
Many think it would appear to be a quiet assignment for someone like Bill Clinton who is used to the world stage.  But any decision would need to include Hilary Clinton’s plans as well.  There has been talk that she is looking to retire from her Secretary of State position to spend more time at home.  Additionally, there is the constant talk of her running for President in 2016, in which case she would probably welcome a few relaxing years in Ireland.
One thing everyone knows about Bill Clinton and that is he has a “big” personality that seems a strange match for a small country like Ireland.  It has been pointed out that even Arkansas (where Clinton is from) is twice as large as Ireland, so it may be a big surprise if these rumors are true.

God bless you!
