How in the WORLD does Face book have OVER 900,000,000 users?!


Face book has OVER 900,000,000 users (40% of the entire world population who has internet)?!!

The world’s total population is currently  7,035,406,159  people¹, and only 2.267  billion of the world population actually have access to the internet. (As of 12/31/11)²

That means that the 905,926,960³  people who are on Face book comprise exactly 40% (rounded up) of the ENTIRE WORLD population that HAS ACCESS to the INTERNET!

Face book currently has  905,926,960³ total users, so here are a few other relevant facts for you to enjoy:

United States
 Total FB users in the U.S.:   162,937,740
 Percent of the US on FB: 51.85%
 Total U.S. population: 314,243,416  (as of Aug 2011)¹
 Canada
 Total FB users in Canada: 16,761,880
 Percent of Canadians on FB: 49.14
 Total Canadian population: 34,108,800 (as of March 2012)

So why, and how, does Facebook have 40% of the entire world population that has access to the internet (not to mention about 50% of the TOTAL population of the US and Canada)?

It’s VIRAL. You join Facebook. You tell a friend or two or three to join probably after your initial “familiarization and learning curve period”.

After this initial period your two or three friends tell two or three of their friends so you now have potentially 12 (the first 3 plus the 9 THEY told) friends. Those 9 tell 3 of their friends each and you have potentially 39 (the first 3 plus the 9 THEY told plus the 27 the 9 told).

But it goes WAY deeper than that. Of the 39, a few of them are already on Facebook and have 30, 60, 100+ friends in their friends list (or more). So, let’s say only 5 of those 39 have the lowest number of friends (30) currently in their friends list. That’s 150 people who could potentially come to you as either a friend suggestion from the person you know or just a random request because they saw you have mutual friends with them. That’s only 5 out of the 39 (or about 13%) already on FB.  Remember Face book has 40% of the ENTIRE WORLD population that has access to the internet (and about 50% of the TOTAL population of the US and Canada). I only figured on 13%! See that?
