Potatoes Helping WiFi on Airplanes?

Potatoes Helping WiFi on Airplanes?

If you were worried about having your job outsourced, here is something that will really surprise you.  Boeing aircraft is now having potatoes helping wifi testing on their planes.

Yes, this is not a misprint … potatoes helping wifi!
It turns out that the term “couch potatoes” has some merit because potatoes react to radio signals almost exactly like humans.  It has to do with how the wave signals are reflected and absorbed.  Wifi is difficult to get just right here on earth and at high altitudes it is even harder, so a lot of testing and adjustments are required.

It is really quite ingenious to do potatoes helping wifi testing because they will not care if the plane leaves late, nor will they complain about the lack of leg room on the plane.

The plane can sit on the tarmac for days and the potatoes won’t care and they won’t ask for overtime pay or report grievances to the potato union.

There is no need for flight attendants giving the oxygen mask demo, or chiding the passengers to turn off their devices and put on their seat belts.  Also the potatoes won’t get up and walk around when the seat belt sign is on.  The potatoes helping wifi testing will also not complain about the price of the tickets and won’t ask for any upgrades either.
It might be just a matter of time before potatoes put more people out of work and add to the unemployment numbers.  Imagine a workforce that doesn’t talk back and won’t ask for any fringe benefits … we may need to take this threat to our jobs seriously!
The funniest part of the whole potatoes helping wifi testing is that the project is named SPUDS (Synthetic Personnel Using Dielectric Substitution).  Maybe this is the potatoes’ revenge on us for inventing French Fries … uh, oh.

God bless you!

Interesting Weather

Interesting Weather

by  | on December 23, 2012
If last week’s storm was any indication, Seattle and area may be in for a nasty winter.
weather

The weather in parts of Washington saw winds gusting to 60 mph followed by a dusting of snow turning to a rain/snow mix with continued wind warnings and tidal overflows and coastal flooding.

Watch what strong winds did to “Gallopin’ Gertie” in Tacoma, WA in 1940:
Strong winds blew through the Puget Sound area and Seattle City Light encouraged its customers to prepare for the possibility of power outages. They reminded everyone to have flashlights with fresh batteries available, charge cell phones and prepare with extra layers of blankets and warm clothing.
High winds always cause transportation infrastructure concerns in the area. “While every state highway is important, this particular wind storm has us paying special attention to the State Route 520 floating bridge,” said the assistant regional administrator of maintenance.

There has been a lengthy wet pattern of weather that began in the Pacific Northwest during the middle of October that just won’t let up. Since October 12, Seattle, Wash has only seen a total of eight completely dry days.

The Old Farmers’ Almanac predicts the rest of December to be cold with periods of rain and snow.  January weather is going to start out just slightly warmer than average with snow and storms in the middle and end of the month.
The AccuWeather forecast shows the winter will be a couple of degrees above normal overall and they agree with the Farmers’ Almanac that there will be cold in late December and mid to late January.  As far as storms go, they think the stormiest times for Seattle will be in early to mid-January, late January, and mid-February.  Overall they are calling for below normal snowfall.
Seattle will get hit by clipper systems and they usually don’t produce large amounts of snow and the bigger snow systems will track further to the south of Washington.
The opposite weather will be true and bigger storms particularly during the months of January and February will result in an above average snowfall season for New York City, Philadelphia, Washington D.C. and Baltimore. Weather in these areas will start off above normal and then change to cooler than normal as winter progresses.
The US Northeast is still dealing with the aftermath of flooding from the super storm Sandy, so these weather predictions will not be welcome in these areas.

God bless you!

Pam Anderson’s debt

Pam Anderson’s debt

by  | on December 23, 2012

Pam Anderson’s debt is reported to have climbed to $1.1 million.  This is estimated to be split between income tax at $370,000 and services of approximately $675,000.

Pam Anderson
The actress, who is now 42 years old, is best known for her role on Baywatch where she became famous for running on the beach in a bathing suit.  She is also famous for a role she had on Home Improvement, but even more so for being the Playboy Playmate of the Month in February 1990.

Here is short montage of Pamela Anderson on Baywatch for your entertainment:
Dancing With the Stars: All-Stars, was her most recent gig, however she was the first dancer to be voted off the show.  There are rumors that she is in negotiations with the British version of Dancing On Ice.  In the last year, Anderson has also been on Big Brother in America, as well as the Bulgarian version of VIP Big Brother.  The gossip columnists are having a field day, saying that Pam Anderson will need to do a lot of dancing and skating to earn enough money to pay off her debt.

The $675,000 portion of Pam Anderson’s debt is for liens on her home in Malibu, California.

Apparently she was having her home renovated and was adding a swimming pool and a guest house.  This house is currently rented out for $50,000. per month.
Pam Anderson has been in this pickle before in 2009.  At that time it was reported that she owed $1.7 million to the IRS when she became one of the top 500 debtors to the state of California.  Maybe by comparison, Pam Anderson’s debt is not bothering her as much as people might think as she managed to pay all but $252,000 of her 2009 debt.
Pamela Anderson’s bio lists her accomplishments as an actress, producer, author, former show girl and activist.  She is well known for taking up the cause of animals rights, denouncing the fur and fashion industries for using fur and is an avid promoter of veganism with the PETA organization.
Pam Anderson was born in Canada and still holds Canadian and American citizenship.  When she was married to the drummer of Motley Crue, Tommy Lee, she was known for a short time as Pamela Anderson Lee.

God bless you!

Hugh Jackman as Jean Valjean in Les Miserables

Hugh Jackman as Jean Valjean in Les Miserables

Early review from the premieres, say this is the role of a lifetime for Hugh Jackman and he does an outstanding job as the fugitive Jean Valjean.

And some are saying that this may be his best performance ever. As Les Miserables is a musical, it is a new genre for Hugh Jackman.
Enjoy this trailer from YouTube by ENTV (click to start watching):
There are a few movies that are described as epics, and Les Miserables is certain to be one of them. It is the story of a 19th century revolution in France and many are making comparisons to the recent struggles in the Middle East.
Director Tom Hooper, wanted all the music shot live – no prerecording or lip synching.  This is because the director wanted to be able to do close ups in the movie and lip synching just doesn’t work.  Along with the traditional songs that are associated with the score of this show, there is one new song added as well.

In talking about the preparation for the movie Hugh Jackman said it was as hard as any movie he had ever done.

In addition to strengthening his voice to sing live on set all day, he had to lose weight as well, because he had to portray Jean Valjean as he comes out of prison at the beginning of the show.  He spent three hours a day at the gym.
Most of the movie was shot outdoors in London in the winter to capture the right flavor of the struggle in the story and at one point he found himself on a mountain at 3 am singing.   Hugh Jackman says he fought very hard to get the role and had never been so aggressive.   He started talking to Tom Hooper even before the director had formally signed on for the movie.
Jackman reports that he had to make every effort to take care of himself during the filming of Les Miserables.  Besides the worry of being outside in the winter, he also had to make sure he looked after his voice.  He would go home not speak at night and part of his routine would be to steam his voice and use meditation to relax between shoots.
When asked what he thought was the essence of the hero Valjean, Hugh Jackman said that Jean Valjean thinks of himself as always failing short of the goal, until right at the very end of the story.  The movie opens in North America on Christmas Day.

God bless you!

Kim Basinger and Daughter Ireland Baldwin

Kim Basinger and Daughter Ireland Baldwin

You rarely hear Kim Basinger’s name being mentioned without also hearing about plastic surgery.  Basinger recently turned 59 and all the gossip pages are at it again.

Kim Basinger
Recently, her daughter Ireland who was vacationing in Hawaii with her mother to celebrate her 17thbirthday, tweeted praise for her mother avoiding plastic surgery.  In part she said: “Ladies, if you want to avoid Botox and any other skin treatments, listen to my mom! She hasn’t had one treatment done because she’s stay (sic) completely out of the sun all these years!”  Kim Basinger seems to practice what she preaches as she was photographed on the beach wearing a gray sweatshirt and lounge pants cover up from the sun.
Ireland is an aspiring model and actor who has grown into quite a beauty.  Many people state that she’s the spitting image of her mother.

Ireland is the daughter of Kim Basinger and her ex Alex Baldwin (the star of 30 Rock).

They were married for eight years and divorced in 2001 making headlines with Baldwin’s infamous leaked voice message, in which he called then 11-year-old Ireland “a rude, thoughtless, little pig.”
Apparently Alec Baldwin does not shy away from plastic surgery as he has been quoted many times saying he is vain and will consider plastic surgery to improve his appearance.

It is not certain whether Kim Basinger, who was born in Athens, Georgia has really gone without having surgery all these years.

In the past, reporters and even plastic surgeons have wondered aloud whether the actress’ perfect face might have been helped with some artificial intervention.  There are also many photographic comparisons of her from ten or twenty years ago, that show she looks younger now than she did then.  But she remains stoic that she has not had any procedures.
Money is certainly not the reason that would stop Kim Basinger from having plastic surgery as she is estimated to be worth $36 million. She acquired her net worth in acting, appearing in many Hollywood movies and earned a Golden Globe and an Oscar for her part in L.A. Confidential.   Her ex-husband Alec Baldwin is reportedly worth $65 million.
When the first marriage of Kim Basinger and Ron Britton ended, Britton sued for alimony and is reported to have settled for $12,000. per month in 1989. Basinger accepted the amount  saying that Britton had taken care of her when she first started in show business.

The Microsoft Surface Tablet Computer

The Microsoft Surface Tablet Computer

by  | on December 18, 2012

The Microsoft Surface became available in October 2012.  It is Microsoft’s first version of a tablet and it will come with their new operating system Windows 8.

Reaction to the Microsoft Surface has been mixed and ranges from “This is one of the most exciting pieces of hardware I’ve ever used. It is extremely well-designed; meticulous even,” to “the whole thing is honestly perplexing.”

Microsoft Surface

It is heavier than the competitive tablets.  It weighs 690g while the iPad4 weighs 640g, but the iPad4 has a smaller screen.  The Microsoft Surface is the exact same thickness as the iPad4 and the Surface has a magnesium “VaporMg” coating that looks like it was chiseled from a piece of slate.
The rear kickstand is a useful part of the Microsoft Surface. It’s made of metal, and does a good job of propping up the tablet to an angle of 22 degrees, even on your lap.  It allows hands-free viewing of videos or photos and when it is closed, it disappears into the casing.
The Touch Cover doubles as a cover and is a pressure-sensitive keyboard just 3mm thick and weighing less than half a pound.  It has the usual Windows shortcut keys, media controls and a track pad. If you need to do a lot of typing or you prefer the feel of a mechanical keyboard, the Type Cover gives you the traditional typing experience.
If you need information in real time while you work on other things, Microsoft Surface has Live tiles and notifications to keep your info coming.  With connected standby, you can stay up-to-date, and since the battery will last 8 hours, you can do all your work, email friends or watch videos on a single charge.  Surface will sync with apps like Mail, Calendar, Photos, Messaging and SkyDrive.

You can personalize your Microsoft Surface start screen and arrange it any way you like and create a picture password to sign in and choose a background to suit your character.

Microsoft Surface comes with Windows RT pre-installed and with Office Home and Student 2013 RT Preview.  The versions of Internet Explorer 10, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote are touch-enhanced if you want to use the touchscreen instead of the keyboard.
Even though Microsoft Surface with Windows RT is very thin, it still has a USB port, a microSD card slot and an HD video out port.  It lets you easily transfer files or use compatible accessories. Surface is also cloud-connected with SkyDrive, so you can access your content from anywhere, at any time, not to mention apps, social media and music.
Please enjoy this Keynote Presentation on the Surface from this past June:

As they say at Microsoft – Charge up, plug in and show off!

What is Hulu?

What is Hulu?

by  | on December 18, 2012

Hulu

According to the Hulu company blog, the name Hulu comes from two Mandarin Chinese words:

In Mandarin, Hulu has two interesting meanings, each highly relevant to our mission. The primary meaning interested us because it is used in an ancient Chinese proverb that describes the Hulu as the holder of precious things. It literally translates to “gourd,” and in ancient times, the Hulu was hollowed out and used to hold precious things. The secondary meaning is “interactive recording.” We saw both definitions as appropriate bookends and highly relevant to the mission of Hulu.
Hulu is a subscription service offering on-demand streaming video of TV shows, movies, webisodes and other news media.  It is available only in USA and Japan.  On its website, it states the availability is due to licensing requirements.  Hulu is free, but the upgraded Hulu Plus comes at a premium.
Like the free version of Hulu, the video available on Hulu Plus also contains commercials. However, there is an expanded content library of full seasons and more episodes of shows already available through Hulu.  Hulu Plus for Android has a new update that adds an ad-free “Hulu Kids” section that has all children-friendly content and parental control.

Hulu Plus is available to view on a large number of platforms, including:

  • Apple TV
  • Blu-ray players (network-enabled)
  • TiVo DVR boxes (Premiere, Premiere XL, and Premiere Elite models)
  • Televisions (network-enabled Smart TVs)
  • Smartphones
  • Wii, Wii U, Nintendo 3DS, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360 game consoles
  • Roku Streaming Player
  • WD TV Media Player
Using converter software, it is possible to burn Hulu content from TiVo to a DVD player.
Due to its success, Hulu has been identified as a possible candidate for an IPO in 2013.  It was profitable in just its second quarter in business.   In 2011, it had bids from Yahoo, DirecTV and Amazon, but all offers were turned down by Hulu’s owners and directors.

Hulu’s biggest competition in the US is Netflix and there are many discussions over which one is best.

Simply, Netflix has a larger selection of movies, but Hulu Plus has the new TV shows, usually shown the day after they first air.  Netflix has more content, though Hulu Plus has more current television shows.
With streaming services like Netflix or Hulu Plus, people are watching more and more made-for-the-web video on mobile devices and computers. The idea of “TV” at home with a television set has disappeared with the only real distinction remaining is between “Internet” and “TV” content.

God bless you!
